A Baby Quilt for my Neighbour

My new A1 quilting machine arrived last week and I have spent some time getting used to the differences.  I am happy to report that I am loving it.  The first quilts have now been quilted and I would like to share the very first quilt I quilted on my new machine.

The quilt is a beautiful baby quilt pieced from fabrics provided by my sister Rita from Red Pepper Quilts.  Rita and I spent an afternoon together cutting, piecing and pressing this little quilt - we had a lovely time sewing together - something we don't do together very often.  I am very lucky to be able to occasionally access her wonderful stash and her eye for colour and design.

The quilt was quilted with one of my favourite all-over patterns Splash which has given it great texture.  The quilt has been made for my neighbours who have just had a baby boy - hopefully it will be well used and loved.

This should be the first of many more quilts to be quilted on the new A1 machine.

Denise Schmidt Churn Dash Quilt

Linda from Quilts in the Barn has recently made a beautiful Churn Dash Quilt set on point made from some of my favourite Denise Schmidt fabrics.

In the style of Denise Schmidt quilts, Linda's quilt has been quilted with an all-over figure 8 design - I do love the simplicity of this quilting design on modern quilts.

Single Girl with Daisies

It seems like a long time ago that I blogged my very first post which was a Single Girl Quilt.  I have once again quilted a Single Girl quilt, this time for my customer Lonnie.  The Single Girl quilt is a very popular design by Denise Schmidt.   Lonnie has made a gorgeous version of this quilt in a range of pinks with splashes of yellow on a solid background for her 10 year old niece.  This is Lonnie's first quilt which has been pieced on her over-locker!  She has done a fabulous job.

Lonnie's quilt has been quilted with  one of my favourite all-over designs - Daisies Galore.  The daisies have been quilted in a pink variegated thread and they certainly stand out on the plain background fabric.

I hope your niece enjoys her new quilt Lonnie and that it is treasured for years to come.

Blogger's Quilt Festival - A Walk In The Woods Quilt

I am once again participating in the Blogger's Quilt Festival organised by Amy of Amy's Creative Side from May 17 to May 31, 2013. The Blogger's Quilt Festival is an online quilt festival where bloggers from around the world showcase a quilt. Once you have had a look here, head on over and take some time viewing the other wonderful quilts.

This time, I am sharing a little baby quilt made by my customer Catherine. Catherine's quilt is a bright baby quilt made mainly from Aneela Hoey's range of A Walk In The Woods fabrics.

Catherine's quilt measures 38 x 42 inches and is going to be perfect for a friend's yet to be born baby girl.   I am sure it is going to be a much treasured quilt.  I have quilted it with one of my favourite designs - Daisies Galore - I do love the way the daisies stand out amongst the cute prints.

I hope you have enjoyed Catherine's quilt - remember to head on over to see many of the other wonderful quilts in the Blogger's Quilt Festival - enjoy!

Hand Pieced Hexagon Star Quilt

My sister, Rita from Red Pepper Quilts has just blogged her beautiful Mother In Law's Hexagon Star Quilt.  I had the pleasure of quilting this quilt for her MIL so thought I would share this quilt with you as well.  Rita has given me permission to show some of her wonderful photos of this quilt.

Jan has spent some three years hand-piecing this quilt - her piecing is incredibly accurate.  Much of the quilt has been fussy cut, resulting in some great stars.

An all-over feather design was quilted, however, this quilt is truly about the magnificent piecing and fabulous fabric selection rather than the quilting.

I have quilted a similar quilt for Maree, a friend of Jan's which was blogged here previously.  Jan is obviously part of a very talented group of quilters.

Flora's Sawtooth Stripe Quilt

I have finished my niece Flora's 18th Birthday quilt.  After the previous post, someone guessed correctly that the design was a Denyse Schmidt Quilt - it is indeed the Sawtooth Stripe Quilt from her book Modern Quilts Traditional Inspiration.

Flora's quilt has been quilted with the iconic Denyse Schmidt loops which lends the quilt a very modern look.

I have included some wonderful orange fabric in the backing of the quilt which was purchased from Surface Art Design - an Australian based fabric design company. Surface Art embraces colour, form and simplicity which usually results in bold, colourful prints.  A single sawtooth stripe has been included across the back of the quilt - here is a snippet of the front and back of the quilt.

I am thrilled with the lime green and orange colour combination.  I am sure the quilt will look great turned down on Flora's bed.

Having just finished year 12 in Queensland, Flora is coming down to Melbourne to study at University at the start of 2013.  While the weather in Queensland is such that a quilt is almost unneccesary, I am sure she will make good use her quilt in our much colder climate.

Happy 18th Birthday Flora.

Blogger's Quilt Festival - Strippy Applique Spring Quilt

I can't believe another Blogger's Quilt Festival has come around yet again.  I have joined in quite a few Blogger's Quilt Festivals and thought I would again - thank you for organising Amy - I always enjoy visiting many of the other quilts.  I know it is the Fall Festival, however, I am sharing what is very much a Spring Quilt given that it is Spring in Australia.

I have recently quilted a very cheerful strippy spring quilt for my customer Karin.  Karin made this colourful quilt for one of her grand-daughters, alternating rows of stripped triangles with strips of appliqued birds.

As Karin's fabrics were very busy and the quilting on the strips of triangles would not show much, we decided to combine edge-to-edge and custom quilting.  The triangle strips are quilted with an all-over design called Daisies Galore.  The applique strips have been outlined around the applique and then quilted freehand with a back-ground fill.

I love the whimsical quilting around the birds.

I hope your Granddaughter is enjoying her beautiful quilt Karin.

Remember to go over to Amy's site and visit many of the other wonderful quilts in the Blogger's Quilt Festival - Fall 2012 - enjoy!

Quilts in the Barn 2012

Quilts in the Barn 2012, organised by Linda of Quilts in the Barn is on again in a few weeks - the exhibition is being held from Friday 5th Octiber through to Sunday 7th October, 2012. The exhibition is a fundraiser for breast cancer research.

This year's exhibition was inspired by the Infinite Variety Exhibition:  Three Centuries of Red & White Quilts held in New York City in 2011.  Since travelling to the exhibition in NYC, Linda has developed an even greater love of Red & White Quilts as you may have seen on my blog, having quilted a number of Red & White Quilts for her.  For a preview of some of the Red & White Quilts which may be on exhibit at Quilts in the Barn 2012, remember the first Red & White Quilt, the beautiful Red Cross Quilt, and the stunning Red & White Quilt #2.  A range of vintage Red & White Quilts from the Mary Koval collection will be also be on display.

The most recent Red & White quilt which I have quilted for Linda is the following beautiful traditional Signature Block Quilt made with reproduction fabrics.

In keeping with the traditional fabrics and design of this quilt, it has been quilted simply with Baptist Fans, one of my favourite designs for reproduction quilts.

I am certainly looking forward to this year's Quilts in the Barn Exhibition - best wishes Linda for what I am sure will be another wonderful exhibition.

Anne's 7th Birthday Quilt

I have just finished quilting a very pretty floral quilt made by my customer Kate.  Kate has made the quilt for her daughter Anne's birthday - Anne is turning 7 this weekend and she loves roses.  I am sure she is going to love this quilt - it is a simple design of floral squares sashed with a solid white fabric.

Anne's quilt has been quilted with one of my favourite designs, Daisies Galore to tie in with the floral theme.  I love the way the small daisies stand out on the white fabric.

Kate has also been very creative with the back of Anne's quilt.  Kate has four children and the hands of Dad, Mum, big brother, big sister, Anne and little sister have been appliqued across the back of the quilt - a very special and thoughtful touch!

Happy Birthday Anne - I am sure you will love your new quilt.

Keep it Simple!

I have recently quilted a number wonderful modern quilts.  The request for these quilts had been to keep the quilting simple and so I obliged.

The first quilt was made by Arlie and is a Denise Schmidt design called Stacking the Odds.

Arlie requested the signature figure 8 Denise Schmidt quilting design which has quilted up beautifully.

Arlie also made the following Strippy Quilt for her son Sammy with a collection of gorgeous fabrics.

With the busy prints, this quilt was not going to be about the quilting.  As a result, simple straight lines were quilted vertically troughout the quilt.

Finally, two of my regular customers Tamsin and Bridie worked together to make the following Denise Schmidt quilt called What a Bunch of Squares as a gift for a friend's significant birthday.  I love the beautiful colour choices of this quilt.

I have quilted spiral squares 1" apart which has accentuated the straight lines of this quilt.

I hope you have enjoyed this selection of modern quilts - I have certainly enjoyed working on them.

Garden Fence Quilt

I have recently quilted Penny's very pretty Garden Fence Quilt.  The quilt has been made using the instructions on Hyacinth Quilt Designs which shows a beautiful version in golds, greys, yellows and white.  Penny's quilt has been made using an array of pretty pinks, greens, white and the occasional splash of orange.

Penny's quilt has been quilted with one of my favourite all-over designs called Daisies Galore.

I love the way the quilted daisies stand out on the plain fabrics and tie in with the many floral fabrics in the quilt - a perfect match really!

Penny's quilt is being raffled to raise funds for her children's school - good luck Penny - the quilt is bound to  do really well.  I am sure the eventual winner will be thrilled to win such a gorgeous quilt.

Quilts in the Barn 2011

Quilts in the Barn 2011, organised by Linda of Quilts in the Barn is on again - the exhibition is being held from next Friday 2nd September through to Sunday 4th September, 2011.  The exhibition is a fundraiser for breast cancer research.

This year, the quilter being featured is Jo Morton.  Jo is a quiltmaker, author, teacher, lecturer, a designer for Andover Fabrics, Inc. of New York, and a student of ancestral quilt making.

Jo presents re-creations of antique quilts, imitating colors and styles of period pieces. Using an antique quilt's color and/or design as a source of inspiration, she creates an interpretation - a quilt that might have existed in the 19th Century. Her quilts are made in a lasting tradition, using new cotton fabrics, cotton batting and cotton quilting thread.

If you are a lover of vintage and reproductions quilts, then this year's Quilts in the Barn is an exhibition not to be missed.

I have recently quilted two quilts for Linda which have been made exclusively with Jo Morton fabrics.  The first quilt is a Strippy Nine-Patch Quilt.

The fabrics used are just beautiful - the quilt has been simply quilted with continuous curves, some in the ditch stitching and 1/4 inch outlining.

As described on her blog, Linda has been working hard on her Tumbler Quilt which is the second quilt I have just completed.  The Tumbler Quilt is huge - a massive 98 inches x 87 inches and an incredible 1,334 tumblers!  The quilt was too large for me to photograph in its entirety, however, here is a snippet.

In keeping with the traditional fabrics and design, the Tumbler Quilt has been quilted with Baptist Fans - one of my favourite designs for reproduction quilts.  I believe they have added some great movement to this quilt.

To see the above quilts as well as many of Jo's quilts from her personal collection, visit Quilts in the Barn.  Wishing you all the best Linda for a wonderful exhibition - may the sun shine this year!

Bleeding Heart Quilt

My customer Alison has just left, picking up 2 quilts - she was very excited when she left.  Today I would like to feature one of those quilts - her Bleeding Heart Quilt.  Alison's quilt is a wonderful black and white quilt with just a splash of colour in the centre, giving the quilt it's name.

Alison's quilt has been quilted with an all-over design called Hearts in Bloom from Timeless Quilting Designs - a very appropriate pattern on this occasion of hearts and daisies.

I do love the centre block of this quilt and the touch of colour it has added.

Alison has also put quite a bit of work into her back with a pieced strip down the centre and red appliqued hearts.  I love the effect of the quilting on the back of this quilt - the contrasting thread has been a great success, resulting in a truly reversible quilt.

I hope you enjoy your quilt Alison - happy binding!

I Spy Quilt

I am slowly returning to quilting after summer holidays and kids getting back to school.  I am looking forward to getting back into our normal routine and quilting.

The quilt I would like to share today is a bright and colourful I Spy Quilt made by my customer Lisa.  Lisa has done a great job, using a huge range of prints and tying them together beautifully with the plain blue sashing and the great border prints.

As the quilt has a lot of busy prints, we decided to quilt it with an all-over star design.

Lisa's quilt has been made as a gift for a young boy - I am sure this quilt will provide hours of entertainment and be treasured for a long time to come.
